What is a seed waiting for?
dormant seed is alive but paused, its tiny embryo protected inside a tough outer coat that keeps moisture and oxygen from reaching it too soon. The seed senses the world around it through warmth, water, and light, essentially waiting for reliable signs that conditions are safe for a young seedling to survive. When just the right amount of rain finally soaks in, or sunlight returns to bare ground after a fire clears away older plants, the seed's coat softens and it finally wakes and begins to grow.
