Wild Wonder

Wild Wonder story

Pip Waits for Her Moment

Deep in the cool, dark soil of a meadow, a tiny seed named Pip is fast asleep — but she isn't lazy. She's listening for exactly the right moment to wake up and grow.

A small round brown seed named Pip drifts down from a tall sunflower and lands in dark meadow soil, autumn leaves scattered nearby under a golden afternoon sky.

Settling into the soil

One golden autumn afternoon, a tiny seed named Pip drifted down from her mother sunflower on a warm breeze and landed softly in the cool, dark soil of the meadow. A passing wind tucked fallen leaves over her like a blanket, and Pip curled inside her tough brown coat, snug and safe, as the meadow grew quiet around her.

A friend in the dark

Weeks passed, then months. Snow blanketed the meadow above, and everything grew still and cold. One evening, a friendly earthworm named Wendell wriggled by and asked, "Aren't you cold down here all alone, Pip?" "I'm resting," Pip told him. "I'm just waiting for the right moment to grow." Wendell thought that sounded like the wisest thing he'd ever heard, and he curled up nearby to keep her company.

Not quite the right sign

When spring arrived, a light sprinkle of rain pattered softly through the soil. Pip felt the damp warmth and wondered, is it time? But her tough little coat stayed firm, sensing that this rain was too brief, too small to trust just yet. Nearby, a few eager sprouts had already pushed up too soon, standing a little wobbly in the cool morning air. Pip breathed slowly and waited a little longer.

The rain she'd waited for

Then one afternoon, the sky grew soft and grey, and a long, steady rain began to fall — not a quick sprinkle, but a deep, soaking rain that lasted the whole day. Water trickled down, down, down through the soil until it reached Pip at last, and warm sunlight followed close behind, glowing gently even through the clouds. This time, everything felt different. This time, felt right. Slowly, softly, Pip's tough brown coat began to loosen.

Reaching for the sun

Pip stretched for the very first time in her whole life. A tiny pale root uncurled and reached down into the cool earth, while a small green shoot pushed up, up, up through the soil toward the light. When her shoot broke through the surface, warm sunshine touched her for the very first time, and Wendell the earthworm cheered from below. Pip had waited so long, and now, at exactly the right moment, she was finally, wonderfully awake.
