Wild Wonder story

Pip and the Wind's Secret

When Pip the rabbit notices every blade of grass leaning the exact same way, she sets off with a swallow named Sable to find out exactly where wind begins.

A small brown rabbit named Pip sits up in a meadow watching tall grass and a fence-post flag all lean the same direction in a steady breeze.

A meadow mystery

Pip the rabbit sat up on her back paws in the meadow, watching every blade of grass lean the exact same way, as if they'd all agreed on a secret. A swallow named Sable swooped low and landed on a nearby fence post. "Where does the wind even begin?" Pip asked, her ears twitching. "Come and find out," said Sable, and off the two friends went.

Where warm air rises

Sable led Pip to the top of a sunny hill, where the grass had grown warm under a whole afternoon of sunshine. Just above the ground, the air wobbled and shimmered, like the meadow itself was breathing. "Feel that?" said Sable. "The sun has been warming this hillside all day, and warm air gets light — so light it rises up and floats away."

A cool, patient pond

Next they hopped and flew down to the shady edge of the forest, where a cool pond sat tucked beneath the leaves. Here the air felt hushed and heavy, almost sleepy. "This patch never got much sun today," Sable explained, "so its air stayed cool, and settled low, and patient."

The wind rushes in

Just then Pip felt it — a rush of cool air pouring out from the forest, hurrying across the meadow to fill the space the warm air had left behind. Leaves spun up in little spirals, and Pip's ears blew flat against her back. "That's it!" Sable laughed into the gust. "That rushing is wind — cool air always racing in to take a warm spot's place."

Listening to the breeze

When the gust settled into a gentle, steady breeze, Pip closed her eyes and simply listened. She could feel the whole afternoon inside it — the warm hill, the cool forest, the great wide sky moving because the sun liked one place ever so slightly more than another. A few dandelion seeds drifted by, and Pip smiled, wondering what secret message this very wind might be carrying, just for her.
