Wild Wonder

Wild Wonder story

Pip's Streak of Light

Far above the clouds, a tiny speck of stardust named Pip drifted alone in the dark — smaller than a grain of sand, but about to have the brightest moment of her life.

A tiny sparkling speck of comet dust named Pip drifts through the dark of space, trailing behind a glowing comet with a long icy tail.

Far from home

Pip was the tiniest speck of rock and dust, smaller than a snowflake, tumbling gently in the cold, silent dark. She had been riding along in the frosty tail of a great comet for as long as she could remember, past swirling galaxies and sleeping planets. Around her, the comet's trail sparkled like scattered sugar, millions of tiny specks just like her, drifting together through the endless quiet.

A quiet wonder

Pip looked up — if a speck of dust can look up — at the stars glittering far, far away, each one a huge, blazing sun. 'I'm not big like them,' she whispered to a nearby speck of dust. 'I'm not made of fire. I'm just... a crumb.' Her friend twinkled back gently. 'Maybe being small just means your moment hasn't come yet.'

A gentle pull

Then, one quiet turn of the sky, a blue and white planet swept into view, spinning along its own patient path. Earth's orbit carried it straight through the comet's old, sparkling trail — the very same trail Pip had ridden for so long. Pip felt a soft tug, gentle as a breeze, drawing her and hundreds of her speck-friends toward the glowing blue world below.

Her brightest breath

Down, down Pip tumbled, faster than she had ever moved, until she brushed against the very top of Earth's air. The air rubbed against her so quickly it grew hot, and hotter still — and suddenly Pip wasn't just a speck anymore. She was glowing! She blazed into a brilliant streak of gold and white, racing across the sky in one dazzling breath of light, brighter than she ever imagined she could be.

Someone was watching

Far below, on a grassy hilltop, a young fox named Ember was watching the sky, waiting the way she did every clear night. When Pip's bright streak flashed above her, Ember gasped and pressed her paws together tight. 'A shooting star!' she whispered, and made a wish before the light could fade. She never knew Pip wasn't really a star at all — just a tiny, brave speck of dust who got to shine, once, gloriously, for someone who was watching.
