The fresh smell you notice when rain first falls on dry ground has its own name — petrichor — and it comes from the earth itself, not from the water.

Where does that rainy smell actually come from?
uring a dry spell, plants release tiny oils that settle onto soil and rocks, and soil bacteria add an earthy-smelling compound called geosmin. When raindrops strike the ground, they trap tiny bits of these scents in bubbles that burst into the air, sending the smell straight into your nose. Human noses are so sensitive to geosmin that we can catch a whiff of it even in amounts far too small to taste in water.
