Why doesn't the moon always look the same?
he moon doesn't actually change shape at all; it's always a whole sphere of rock, but it travels all the way around the Earth roughly once a month while the sun lights up different parts of it from our point of view. As the moon moves along its orbit, we on Earth see more or less of its sunlit half, sometimes just a sliver and sometimes the whole glowing face. Those changing views are what we call moon phases, and they repeat in the very same steady order every single cycle.
