Wild Wonder story
Ruby's Endless Spin
When a little comet named Pip drifts past Jupiter, she meets a storm so old and so vast that it has been swirling since long before her journey began.
A giant world appears
Pip the comet loved long journeys best of all. One quiet night, she swept past the sun and saw something enormous glowing ahead — a giant striped ball of cloud, wrapped in creamy bands of tan and orange, with one deep red swirl tucked inside like a jewel. "Jupiter," Pip whispered, slowing her icy tail to look closer. "And what is that swirling red eye?"
The storm that never sleeps
As Pip drifted closer, the red swirl seemed to turn toward her, its clouds curling into something almost like a smile. "Hello, little traveler," rumbled a voice made of wind. "I am Ruby, and I have been spinning here since before your comet trail was ever drawn." Pip's icy tail sparkled with surprise. "How can one storm spin for so long," she asked, "without ever stopping?"
Nothing in her way
Ruby's clouds rippled with a chuckle. "On Earth, mountains and oceans slow a storm down. But Jupiter has no ground at all, sweet Pip — only soft, thick gases, all the way down. There is nothing to catch my winds and make them rest." She spun a little faster to show off, ribbons of cloud streaming past. "I turn all the way around just once every few days, and my winds blow stronger than any hurricane your Earth has ever known."
Growing gently smaller
Pip tilted her tail, thinking. "Will you spin forever, then?" Ruby's swirl slowed, growing thoughtful. "Even I am changing, little one. The star-watchers on Earth have studied me for over a hundred years, and they say I've been shrinking, ever so slowly. Not even they know exactly when I first began to spin." She didn't sound sad — only wise, like someone who had watched a very long story unfold.
A story to carry onward
Pip wanted to stay and listen forever, but her journey called her onward, toward farther stars. "Thank you for your story, Ruby," she said, spinning a happy little loop. "I'll carry it with me wherever I go." As she drifted away, Pip wondered what else in the universe had been quietly spinning, growing, and changing longer than anyone could remember — and the thought made her tail sparkle all the way home.
