Wild Wonder story

Nia's Tiny Naps

Nia the giraffe is the tallest friend on the savanna, but even tall friends get sleepy. Come find out her secret for resting without ever really lying down for long.

A young giraffe stands on the golden savanna at sunset, giving a big yawn as the sky turns peach and pink.

A sleepy sunset

Out on the wide, golden savanna lived a young giraffe named Nia, the tallest friend for miles around. As the sky turned peach and pink, her eyelids grew heavy and she gave a giraffe-sized yawn. "I'm so sleepy," she thought, "but how does someone as tall as me ever get to rest?"

A curious little bird

A little weaver bird named Pip fluttered onto a branch beside her. "Aren't you tired, Nia?" Pip chirped. "So tired," said Nia, "but I can't just fall asleep like you do. Out here, I have to keep watching for lions."

Eyes closed, just for a moment

Nia let her long eyelashes droop, right there on her feet, and closed her eyes for the tiniest moment, just a few minutes, before popping them open again to check the grass. "That was a nap?" asked Pip, amazed. "That was one of many," said Nia. "I take lots of tiny naps, all through the day and night."

Curled like a question mark

Nia folded her long legs and curled her neck gently around her side, soft as a question mark, resting her chin near her hip. "Sometimes I stand tall like before, and sometimes like this," she said. "But even curled up, I only rest a little while, so I'm always ready to spring back up if I need to."

Stars keep watch too

Pip watched as Nia dozed for a few peaceful minutes, then lifted her head, blinked at the stars, and settled again for another tiny rest. "So you never sleep long at all?" Pip whispered. "Not all in one go," Nia murmured, "but all my small naps add up, just enough to keep me strong, and always ready to watch over the savanna."
