Why would an animal need to change color?
iny crystals inside a special layer of a chameleon's skin can spread apart or squeeze closer together, changing the way they bend and reflect light into different colors, almost like a living kaleidoscope. Spreading the crystals apart tends to shift the skin toward warmer, brighter colors like orange, yellow, or red. Brighter colors can mean a chameleon is excited, ready to defend its space, or hoping to meet another chameleon, while calmer, duller colors often mean it feels safe and relaxed.
