Wild Wonder story
Skye and the Dancing Sky
When a curious fox pup spots a ribbon of green light rippling over the snow, she learns the sky is glowing with secrets carried all the way from the sun.
A strange glow appears
Skye the arctic fox pup had never stayed up this late before. She crept out of her snow den just as the stars came out, and stopped mid-step. Far above the hills, a thin ribbon of green light had begun to glow, curling softly like a scarf caught in a breeze. "What... is that?" she whispered, her breath puffing white in the cold air.
A wise friend appears
"That's the sky dancing, little one," came a soft hoot from a nearby branch. Ollie, an old snowy owl with feather-soft eyes, glided down beside her. "It starts a very long way from here, with the sun." "The sun? But the sun's asleep now," Skye said, puzzled. Ollie chuckled. "Even while it sleeps on our side of the world, it's always breathing out tiny invisible sparks that race across all of space."
Green, pink, and purple
"Those little sparks finally reach us way up high, above even the clouds," Ollie explained, "and when they bump into the air itself, the air lights up, just like a lantern waking up. Oxygen glows green, like the ribbon you saw first. Nitrogen glows pink and purple, like the edges you see now." Skye's eyes went wide as the whole sky seemed to blush with color. "The air is glowing," she breathed. "The whole sky is a lantern!"
Waves without wind
As Skye watched, the ribbons of light began to sway and curl, rippling like slow waves on a hidden ocean. "Why does it dance instead of just sitting still?" she asked. "Our whole Earth is wrapped in an invisible force, like a giant unseen hand," Ollie said. "It gently steers those little sparks along curving paths, so the glow ripples and swirls instead of standing still." Skye's family padded up the hill to watch too, their eyes reflecting the shifting green and violet light.
A sky full of wonder
Skye nestled between her mother and father, watching the lights ripple on and on. "If I could make the sky glow any color I wanted," she said sleepily, "I think I'd choose the warmest gold, for how happy I feel right now." Ollie tucked his wings and smiled. "Then somewhere, some night, maybe it will." And as the aurora danced softly above them, Skye drifted off to sleep, wrapped in light borrowed all the way from the sun.
