Wild Wonder

Wild Wonder story

Skye's Endless Summer

Skye had just hatched beneath a sun that never set, too small to imagine she'd soon fly farther than any other creature on Earth. Her mother was about to show her the biggest secret in the sky.

A fluffy grey Arctic tern chick pokes her head out of a scrappy nest on a rocky cliff, under a bright sun low on the horizon at midnight, with the sea glinting below.

Born under the midnight sun

Skye cracked out of her speckled egg on a windy cliff at the top of the world, blinking up at a sun that never seemed to set. "Doesn't it ever get dark?" she chirped to her mother, Mira. "Not here, not now," Mira laughed, tucking a wing around her. "This is the land of endless daylight — and soon, little one, you'll learn just how far that daylight can take you."

The flock gets ready

As summer began to fade, the cliffs grew noisy with flapping wings and busy chatter. Every tern was stretching, testing the wind, getting ready for something enormous. "Where is everyone going?" Skye asked, watching the horizon stretch on forever. "To the other end of the world," said Mira gently, "farther than you can imagine — and you're coming too." Skye's small heart fluttered. How could someone so small fly so far?

Learning to ride the wind

Mira spread her wings wide instead of flapping and let the wind lift her effortlessly along the cliff. "Watch," she called. "You don't have to fight the wind, Skye — you can ride it." Skye tried, holding her wings steady instead of beating them hard, and felt the breeze catch beneath her like a gentle hand. "There you go," Mira said warmly. "Glide when you can, save your strength, and let the sky do some of the work."

Chasing the sunlight south

Wing to wing with the whole flock, Skye rose into the open sky and began the longest journey of her life. Day after day they glided over gleaming oceans, riding every favorable breeze, always steering toward wherever the sun still lingered. When one sky dimmed toward autumn, they simply flew until they found a brighter one. Skye watched the stars change beneath her and marveled — she was chasing summer itself, all the way around the world.

A second summer, waiting

At last, the flock arrived at the bottom of the world, where the ice glittered and the sun hung bright and warm all over again. Skye landed, breathless and amazed. "Mira — it's summer here too!" she cried. "That's our secret," Mira said, settling beside her. "By flying to wherever summer is, we get to see more daylight than any other creature on Earth — two summers, every single year." Skye looked out at the endless shining water and felt her small heart grow as wide as the sky she'd crossed to find it.
