Insect field note
Small but strong
The Mighty Ant Team
One tiny ant can lift many times its own body weight, and a whole colony can move things far too big for any single ant.
Let's look closer
How can such small creatures be so strong together?
n ant's body is built light, and its muscles are powerful compared to its tiny size, letting it lift heavy loads all on its own. But an ant's true strength comes from teamwork: when a piece of food is too big or too heavy, ants release scent trails that call more workers over to help. By pulling together in the same direction, a colony can drag whole leaves, dig out tunnels, and carry food many times larger than any single ant could ever manage.
